The foundation of advocates’ role in Indian Country is built upon the Indigenous understanding of relationships and roles as relatives in the context of historical and ongoing dynamics of colonization. The key principles of advocacy come from Indigenous cultural beliefs and values and encompass concepts of resilience, trauma-informed approaches, and sovereignty. These are the themes of this workshop hosted by the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center from July 25 to July 27, 2023, both in-person in Aurora, Colorado and virtually. The workshop will focus on the dynamics and impact of intimate partner violence, particularly on Native women. Key topics include basic advocacy skills, confidentiality, and elements of shelter and other safe spaces. There is also a special session on COVID-19 mitigation best practices and indoor air mitigation tools. There is a registration fee for participation.

The American Public Human Services Association (APHSA) advances the well-being of all people by influencing modern approaches to sound policy, building the capacity of public agencies to enable healthy families and communities, and connecting leaders to accelerate learning and generate practical solutions together. APHSA is convening the 2023 Economic Mobility & Well-Being Conference in Long Beach, California from August 27-30, 2023. Over the course of three and a half days, participants can choose from 51 workshops to attend. There is a registration fee for participation.

The National Association of Workforce Boards will hold its annual conference in Washington, D.C. from March 21 to March 24, 2020. The conference features issue sessions, industry roundtables, workshops, and intensive technical assistance sessions with representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor and other partner Federal agencies. This year’s event will also include discussions of best practices and strategies from participants of the association’s Leadership Academy, as well as plenary sessions covering Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) reauthorization.

The Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin at Madison will host a seminar on February 13, 2020 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. CT to discuss the effect of parental incarceration on families. A faculty member at the University of Wisconsin at Madison will present research exploring risk factors that influence how adults perceive and experience parenting, including attachment, relationship quality, and socioeconomic status. Jobs for the Future will host an invite-only event on February 12, 2020 in San Francisco, California on how virtual reality impacts corporate learning and employee performance. Corporate leaders will share stories of immersive learning; discussion will focus on the implications of immersive learning technology in the workplace and demonstrations of immersive learning tools. The Fathers & Families Coalition of America will convene its 21st Annual National Conference from February 24 to February 27, 2020 in Los Angeles, California. Conference highlights include presentations on innovative practices on parenting and family engagement by leading practitioners, identification of evidence-based models on responsible fatherhood by researchers, and small group discussions among participants. The Aspen Institute will host a half-day session on January 21, 2020 in Washington, D.C. as part of the five-year anniversary celebration of the UpSkill America initiative. Speakers from the business community, policy makers, researchers, and upskilling program graduates will discuss lessons learned from the Upskill America initiative, identify innovative approaches for upskilling, review common challenges to implement upskilling initiatives, and explore the future of this initiative. The National Skills Coalition will convene its annual Skills Summit from February 3 to February 5, 2020 in Washington, D.C. The Skills Summit will include networking opportunities with workforce leaders, updates on federal workforce policy from both agency and Capitol Hill perspectives, as well as interactive policy development sessions on the future of work that covers digital literacy, business engagement, and reemployment. Despite decreasing child poverty rates over the last 50 years, 9.7 million U.S. children live in families with incomes below the poverty line. The Center for Poverty Research, University of California-Davis, will host a live presentation on January 16, 2020 from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. PT at the Center’s Sacramento location to discuss a report from the National Academy of Sciences on child poverty. During this presentation, a University of California-Irvine professor will highlight causal evidence on the consequences of poverty on children’s development and research on anti-poverty programs’ impact on children. He will also review poverty reduction and employment changes for various policy approaches aimed at reducing child poverty by half over the next decade.

The Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin at Madison will host a live presentation on December 5, 2019 from 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET to discuss research findings about the impact of removing children from families under investigation for abuse or neglect. The presentation will cover findings of home removal for young children under the age of 6 and the measurable gains in test scores and reductions in grade repetition for young girls. The presentation will also reflect the long-term impacts that home removal has on the social and emotional well-being of both boys and girls. The research is drawn from a review of two decades of child protective service records in Rhode Island.
