Learn with Project IMPROVE at the National Association for Welfare Research and Statistics Workshop

The Office of Family Assistance’s Project IMPROVE will present at the National Association for Welfare Research and Statistics (NAWRS) workshop from October 8 to 11, 2023. Project IMPROVE will be onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah, to spread knowledge about their work and how it supports Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and related programs to use and build evidence to improve. The Project IMPROVE team will present on cultivating an evidence-informed leadership practice (October 9 from 9:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.), leveraging business process management to improve experiences for staff and participants (October 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.), and evidence-informed evaluation technical assistance (October 10 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.). There is a fee for registration.

NICWA Training Institute

Throughout the year, the National Indian Child Welfare Association hosts both in-person and virtual trainings to provide professional development opportunities that offer knowledge in the ever-changing field of child welfare. The September Training Institute will take place from September 12 to 14, 2023 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The different tracks include Positive Indian Parenting, Understanding the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978, and Cross-Cultural Skills in Indian Child Welfare. 2023 ACT Workforce Summit

Foundation and Key Principles: Strengthening the Role of Advocacy in Indian Country Workshop

The foundation of advocates’ role in Indian Country is built upon the Indigenous understanding of relationships and roles as relatives in the context of historical and ongoing dynamics of colonization. The key principles of advocacy come from Indigenous cultural beliefs and values and encompass concepts of resilience, trauma-informed approaches, and sovereignty. These are the themes of this workshop hosted by the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center from July 25 to July 27, 2023, both in-person in Aurora, Colorado and virtually. The workshop will focus on the dynamics and impact of intimate partner violence, particularly on Native women. Key topics include basic advocacy skills, confidentiality, and elements of shelter and other safe spaces. There is also a special session on COVID-19 mitigation best practices and indoor air mitigation tools. There is a registration fee for participation.

Capturing the Real-Time Experiences of Families Affected by Parental Incarceration

The Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin at Madison will host a seminar on February 13, 2020 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. CT to discuss the effect of parental incarceration on families. A faculty member at the University of Wisconsin at Madison will present research exploring risk factors that influence how adults perceive and experience parenting, including attachment, relationship quality, and socioeconomic status.
