This National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse state profile examines the interaction between fathers and programs funded by the West Virginia Department of Human Services to support families, particularly the program services available through the TANF program.

The Office of Family Assistance published data tables which show TANF and Separate State Programs-Maintenance of Effort (SSP-MOE) caseloads separately, as well as combined by state and at the national level from October 2023 through September 2024. The tables are cross-tabbed to include total numbers of recipients, adult recipients, child recipients, families, one-parent families, two-parent families, no parent families, and monthly caseload data.

Nearly twenty years ago, the Office of Family Assistance hosted the Faith-based and Community Organizations (FBCO) Initiative to better understand and enhance the partnerships between Federal, State, or local governments and FBCOs to provide employment and self-sufficiency services to TANF participants and other low-income populations. While this initiative has since ended, the promising work of the public sector and FBCO collaborations has not. This PeerTA webpage provides resources intended to help identify, establish, maintain, and strengthen partnerships between TANF agencies and FBCOs.

At the 2024 National Fatherhood Summit, participants learned how TANF funding can support fatherhood programs. Attendees learned how fatherhood programming fits into the purposes of TANF, how some states are using their TANF funds to support fathers, and how cross-agency partnerships can support and encourage responsible fatherhood. The presenters also shared promising practices for recruiting, serving, retaining, and engaging fathers.

The Office of Family Assistance (OFA) held the Linking Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Families to Employment and Economic Opportunities Meeting in August 2017. This meeting allowed TANF program representatives from around the country the opportunity to learn about promising practices and actionable implementation strategies to improve employment outcomes and economic independence among TANF families. This session offers popular curriculum models for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention program grantees, including abstinence education and Personal Responsibility Education Program, one of the largest federally funded programs designed to address adolescent pregnancy and prepare youth for successful transition to adulthood.

The Office of Family Assistance (OFA) held the Linking Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Families to Employment and Economic Opportunities Meeting in August 2017. This meeting allowed TANF program representatives from around the country the opportunity to learn about promising practices and actionable implementation strategies to improve employment outcomes and economic independence among TANF families. This session included the efforts of the Office of Adolescent Health to Coordinate adolescent health initiatives across HHS, including Teenage Pregnancy Prevention programs.

The Office of Family Assistance (OFA) held the Linking Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Families to Employment and Economic Opportunities Meeting in August 2017. This meeting allowed TANF program representatives from around the country the opportunity to learn about promising practices and actionable implementation strategies to improve employment outcomes and economic independence among TANF families. This session included the TANF efforts to reduce non-martial births, including abstinence programs, visiting nurse services, and services for youth such as teen pregnancy prevention, counseling, and after-school programs.

The Office of Family Assistance published this Dear Colleague Letter to highlight a previously disseminated letter, Identifying and Ending Welfare for Illegal Aliens, to encourage states to align their programs to Executive Order 14218’s provisions and federal statutes and regulations, concerning restrictions on permitting illegal aliens to obtain cash or non-cash federal public benefits.
