This U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness report provides a set of 9 action steps and a list of recommended resources pertaining to each action step that community groups can use to integrate affordable housing with approaches to end homelessness. These steps reflect a strategic approach that: aligns efforts; sets goals; encourages messaging to build awareness; promotes development; leverages federal, state, and local funding; integrates health and housing resources; and ensures access to affordable housing for persons with housing barriers.

Piloted in Michigan and expanded to other communities nationally, Double Up Food Bucks is an innovative program for reducing food insecurity and has generated benefits for families relying on SNAP, farmers, and the communities in which they live. The program doubles the value of SNAP benefits spent on locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets and grocery stores; this enables families to purchase healthy produce in greater quantities and at the same time supports local farmers.

This Urban Institute study offers findings on how food insecurity impacts youth (ages 10 to 17), based on interviews and case studies of youth who participated in 20 focus groups in 10 communities. Discussion covers not only the data about food insecurity for teens, but also reflects the strategies that teens employ to mitigate or hide the effects of food insecurity.

This report from the Food Research and Action Center presents an analysis of the long-term health impacts from food insecurity among children, adults, and older adults. The report summarizes the chronic diseases, mental health concerns, and other health-related conditions (such as cost-related medication underuse) associated with food insecurity that each of these populations encounter.

This U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service report reviews demonstration projects and innovative strategies to address childhood hunger and food insecurity. Authorized by the 2010 Child Nutrition Act, findings from the planning and implementation stages of projects within Chickasaw Nation, Kentucky, Nevada, and Virginia are presented and are drawn from document reviews, technical assistance phone calls, field interviews, and focus groups convened at each location.

This University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research report studies how SNAP addresses food insecurity’s effect on health and healthcare utilization for low-income families with incomes below 50 percent of the poverty line compared with those with incomes between 50 percent and 200 percent of the poverty line. Data from 2011 to 2014 surveys of 23,000 persons is analyzed to compare the measure of SNAP benefits with health-related outcomes in nonelderly adults versus children.

The Food Research and Action Center and the AARP Foundation developed the Screen, Document and Intervene: Addressing Food Insecurity in Older Adults online course, which teaches community-based partners and health care providers how to identify, screen and assess food insecurity among individuals age 50 or older. On May 30, 2018, the National Resource Center on Nutrition and Aging hosted a webinar on the training. This Brookings Institution blog reviews the impact of SNAP in reducing food insecurity by geography. Presently, there are almost no differences in SNAP benefit formulas by state except Alaska and Hawaii. Data shows that geographical variation in food insecurity results from higher food prices in some states, which is associated with diminished SNAP purchasing power and greater food insecurity.

Trends discussed include percentage of children living in food-insecure households, household food insecurity levels by race, and food insecurity prevalence for children in single parent and married couple households.

This study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service provides a national analysis about the state of household food security. National data identifies food insecurity prevalence by selected household characteristics, level of food spending by the same selected household characteristics, and participation rates by household in Federal food and nutrition assistance programs.
