This data set from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service identifies national level participation in and costs for SNAP from 1969-2018, national and/or state level monthly and/or annual data on the number of persons and households receiving SNAP and total benefits and average monthly SNAP benefits from FY 1969 to FY 2019 (until December 2018), and state and county SNAP participation rates.

Food Security, Health, and Healthcare Utilization: The Role of SNAP for Families in Extreme Poverty

Record Description
This University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research report studies how SNAP addresses food insecurity’s effect on health and healthcare utilization for low-income families with incomes below 50 percent of the poverty line compared with those with incomes between 50 percent and 200 percent of the poverty line. Data from 2011 to 2014 surveys of 23,000 persons is analyzed to compare the measure of SNAP benefits with health-related outcomes in nonelderly adults versus children.

Increasing SNAP Purchasing Power Reduces Food Insecurity and Improves Child Outcomes

Record Description
This Brookings Institution blog reviews the impact of SNAP in reducing food insecurity by geography. Presently, there are almost no differences in SNAP benefit formulas by state except Alaska and Hawaii. Data shows that geographical variation in food insecurity results from higher food prices in some states, which is associated with diminished SNAP purchasing power and greater food insecurity.
