Pathways-to-Outcomes: How Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education Program Activities May Lead to Intended Outcomes

This July 2020 webinar from the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation presented three Pathways-to-Outcomes models of Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education (HMRE) programs. The models are based on research evidence to find the association between specific program activities and the impact on HMRE participants for observed outcomes. The models might have applicability for program design and implementation for other HMRE programming for observable outcomes.

Relationship Education: A Trauma-Informed Approach for Youth

Record Description

The effects of trauma on teens and young adults can be far reaching. The Dibble Institute will host a webinar on November 11, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET to present findings and lessons learned from a study conducted by researchers from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In the study, a trauma-informed approach utilizing relationship education was implemented with over 100,000 young people over four years in San Antonio. The speakers will define trauma, its effects on young people, and their reactions to trauma, and will discuss adverse childhood experiences. The webinar is intended for Federal- and state-funded grant managers, program supervisors, teachers, health care staff, and others who work with high-need youth.

The Secret Sauce: Strategies to Include Social Capital in Human Services

Record Description

The Aspen Institute’s ASCEND initiative will host a webinar on October 28, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. ET to discuss the role of social capital as part of the 2Gen approach. Social capital, the “secret sauce” of the 2Gen approach, is demonstrated by increased peer support, greater sense of community belonging, and connections with family, friends, and neighbors. Social capital is also manifested in participation in community- and faith-based organizations, outreach by schools and the workplace, and engagement with case managers or career coaches. This webinar will include presentations from leadership and staff at the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, who will cover the identification and dissemination of emerging practices for measuring and using social capital. There will also be discussion of how practitioners can use a 2Gen approach to help their clients build relationships to attain their identified goals.

Intimate Partner Violence Webpage

This webpage from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is comprised of fast facts, risk and protective factors, prevention strategies, and resources related to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Teen Dating Violence. There is also a technical package that contains evidence-based programs, policies, practices, and strategies focused on preventing IPV and its consequences on individuals across the lifespan. The strategies include teaching healthy relationship skills, engaging influential adults and peers, disrupting the pathway for IPV, creating protective environments, strengthening families’ economic support, and supporting survivors to lessen harm and increase safety.

Moving Families Forward: Initial Findings from a Two-Generation Program in Bangor, Maine

ELEVATE: Implementation of a Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education Program by a Statewide Cooperative Extension Service

Record Description

This process study report from the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation features the University of Florida’s ELEVATE program, which is delivered by the University’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences county-based Cooperative Extension Service. ELEVATE aims to teach couples practical approaches to support healthy relationships and to develop mindfulness practices that address the physiological response to conflict and stress. The study covers the context for implementing ELEVATE, procedures for greater implementation of ELEVATE through the Extension statewide, and approaches for recruitment and enrollment of couples and for encouraging program participation and engagement. The study is part of the Strengthening Relationship Education and Marriage Services evaluation of five Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education grantees.

A Two-Generation Approach to Ending Poverty in Utah

Record Description

This issue brief by Voices for Utah Children in conjunction with the Aspen Institute focuses on two-generation strategies to reduce poverty. Voices for Utah worked with Utah lawmakers to address the issue by passing the Intergenerational Poverty Mitigation Act in 2012 and creating an Intergenerational Poverty Advisory Commission in 2013. The goal was to develop evidence-based strategies and interventions with policymakers to increase economic security, educational success, social capital, and health and well-being for families. This legislation and approach have been a critical step in creating a framework for states to develop five- and ten-year plans to address poverty.

Escaping Poverty

Record Description

This report presents data on persistently poor children, the patterns for work and school attendance and poverty among persistently poor children as they advance to early adulthood, and what characteristics can differentiate between people who were poor as children and who are more and less economically successful in adulthood. The characteristics examined include race, gender, parents’ education, mother’s age at child’s birth, and broader family circumstances such as employment and disability status, family structure, residential stability, and income volatility. The report relies on longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics for children born from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s.
