Helping Low-Income Adults Achieve College Success: Analysis of Career Pathways Program Study Participants

Record Description
This blog post from the Administration for Children and Families provides an overview of the Pathways to Advancing Careers and Education study, which focuses on nine career pathways programs and looks at risk factors that prevent low-income students from achieving college success. For example, having better grades in high school predicted enrolling in college, staying in college, and earning credentials; and being able to devote time to full-time education, rather than having to work a high number of hours while enrolled in school, has at least as much influence as money on the likelihood of enrolling and persisting in college.

The Arkansas Career Pathways Initiative: Phase One Research Results

Record Description
Since 2006, the Arkansas Career Pathways Initiative has used TANF funds to help eligible parents attend community and technical colleges across the state for education and training to prepare them for well-paying jobs in high-demand industries. This evaluation report from College Count$ details findings showing that over half of participating parents graduated college with an associate degree or technical certificate, which is more than twice the rate of their peers across Arkansas. Additionally, the study suggests that students enrolled in 2011 earned more than $3,000 annually in their first year after degree completion than their TANF counterparts in similar types of jobs.

Career Pathways Leading Improved Services

Record Description
This blog post from the Administration for Children and Families provides a discussion of Career Pathways, which are a promising solution to help Americans acquire marketable and in-demand skills through integrated programs and services for students and job seekers transitioning from education to employment. In April 2012, the U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services formed a federal partnership and issued a joint letter of commitment. The partnership helps promote the use of career pathways to assist youth and adults in acquiring valuable skills and credentials through better alignment with employers, educational institutions, training and employment providers, and human and social service agencies. Building on that work, ACF has expanded support to multiple agencies to foster better coordination of programs and services.
