Serving Male-Identified Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

While women and girls disproportionately experience intimate partner violence (IPV), recent CDC data show that almost 16 million men have experienced severe physical violence from an intimate partner. This technical assistance guidance from the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence provides resources for serving male-identified survivors of IPV. The authors describe some of the challenges men face when accessing domestic violence services, including fear, shame, diminished self-worth, substance abuse, and risk of physical harm. To counter these challenges, the guide offers tips for creating a welcoming atmosphere for male survivors, such as developing inclusive awareness materials, hosting focus groups, and ensuring that the organization name does not focus solely on women. The guide also includes resources for providing gender-inclusive services, building partnerships, and enhancing organizational policies.
