Secondary Migration: What Communities are Doing to Ensure Success and Self-Sufficiency for Second Waves of Refugees

On September 23, 2014, the Office of Refugee Resettlement hosted the "Secondary Migration: What Communities are Doing to Ensure Success and Self-Sufficiency for Second Waves of Refugees" Webinar. Every year, the United States welcomes more refugees than any other country in the world. Refugees are placed in locations throughout the country where services are available to help with resettlement and integration. For a variety of reasons, some refugees choose to move from the city where they are initially placed, which can present challenges and opportunities for both refugees and providers of public services. This Webinar highlighted best practices for supporting refugees that have chosen to move to a new community after initial resettlement. Speakers included: Amy Shir, ORR TA Provider; Lewis Kimsey, Kansas State Refugee Coordinator; Susan Downs-Karkos, Welcoming America; and Brenda Zion, formerly of One Morgan County, Colorado.
