Children in Immigrant Families – The U.S. and 50 States: Economic Need Beyond the Official Poverty Measure

Child Trends authored this research brief on immigrant children in the United States, utilizing data from the Census. Researchers review poverty rates between immigrant children and children in native-born families. In this brief, authors look at the official poverty measure in relation to what families spend for housing, food, and other necessities; transportation for work; child care/early education; and income and payroll taxes. When using a new measure for poverty, the gap between immigrant and native-born children widens, as immigrant children are more likely to experience poverty.
