By 2020, 65% of jobs will require at least some form of postsecondary education; however, today, only 41% of adults have an associate degree or higher. The brief describes the need for policies to focus not only on academic supports, but on non-academic supports targeted toward low-income community college students, especially student parents and first-generation students. These populations are often faced with financial, developmental, or other non-academic barriers.

ACF is Funding Research to Strengthen Subsidized Employment Efforts

ACF and the Department of Labor (DOL) recently announced an evaluation of subsidized employment efforts. The evaluation will aim to help States and localities use and expand subsidized employment strategies for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients, non-custodial parents, disconnected youth, and other low-income and/or at-risk youth and adults. The Rise of Single Fathers: A Ninefold Increase since 1960

TANF Work Participation Rates for FY 2012

Record Description
This resource includes data from each state’s TANF work participation rates, which measure how well states engage families receiving assistance in certain work activities. States must meet an overall and a two-parent work participation requirement to avoid a potential financial penalty. The statutory requirements for FY 2012 are 50% for all families and 90% for two-parent families, but a state’s individual target rates equal the statutory rates minus a credit for reducing its caseload.
