Disconnected Youth: Federal Action Could Address Some of the Challenges Faced by Local Programs That Reconnect Youth to Education and Employment

This paper is from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and provides a review of programs serving at-risk youth transitioning into adulthood. Youth that are disconnected from school and employment are more likely to take part in crime, use public assistance, and become incarcerated. The GAO conducted an analysis of local programs serving these youth, and found that the Department of Labor should work with States and Workforce Investment Boards to support programs serving at-risk youth.
