The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) will sponsor a webinar on October 28, 2020 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET featuring leaders from three employment and training programs (Climb Wyoming, Rhode Island Works, and Community Action Organization of Scioto County).

The U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration hosted the third plenary session of the H-1B Apprenticeship Virtual Grantee Convening on October 22, 2020 to discuss innovative sector-based approaches to apprenticeships. These approaches can help improve apprenticeship programs, quicken employer recruitment, and benefit smaller employers. Speakers included representatives of the Aspen Institute/UpSkill America, Lorain County Community College (Ohio), the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association, and the Alabama Community College System.

The Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin will host a virtual seminar on October 15, 2020 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. CT. The seminar will discuss metrics, covering financial well-being, secure and stable housing, family stability, health, supportive communities, education, and work, that embody the comprehensive definition of economic and social mobility developed by the U.S. Partnership on Mobility from Poverty. Urban Institute’s Greg Acs will lead the seminar’s discussion.

Research-To-Practice Brief
This research-to-practice brief examines how training providers are adapting in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and how they can redesign training programs to better serve populations with the most barriers to employment. The brief is informed by interviews with community colleges and community-based organizations, and interaction with workforce boards and training providers. The brief identifies two overarching principles — keeping equity at the forefront and remaining flexible and open to change — to inform program design considerations.

This tool kit, funded in part by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, explores how apprenticeship programs can promote equitable outcomes for youth and young adults who have been historically marginalized by education and workforce systems, especially young people of color. The toolkit explains key concepts related to equity, such as the difference between achieving equitable versus equal outcomes.
