The National Association of Counties will host the second of a two-part webinar on December 5, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. ET to review the collection, management, and sharing of data among health and human services and justice systems to address incarcerated persons with mental illness. Subject matter experts from county health and human services and justice systems at the local level will discuss how they implemented data policies and systems and the ways this data has been used to connect people to related supportive services and treatment programs.

This Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation report is a feasibility evaluation of the Bridges to Pathways (Bridges) program. The Bridges program addressed youth ages 17 to 21 exiting the criminal or juvenile justice system. Through the program, participants who did not have a high school diploma earned this credential. They also engaged in social-emotional learning workshops, and participated in a subsidized internship.

The second part of this webinar series will be hosted in December 2019.

This Brookings Institution report from the Hamilton Project examines the reasons behind the decline in labor force participation over the last two years. The analysis identifies trends in labor force participation by age, gender, race, and educational level. The report also reviews proposals for increasing participation among non-college-educated workers and how changes in caregiving responsibilities, health and disability, and criminal justice reform affect engagement with the labor market.

UTEC measures the social and economic success of its mission through Reduced Recidivism, Increased Employability, and Increased Educational Attainment. Founded in 1999 in response to gang violence in Lowell, MA. They serve older youth (ages 17-25) from Lowell, Lawrence, and Haverhill, MA who have histories of incarceration or serious gang involvement.

Originally founded in 1998 as Dress for Success Midwest, Connections to Success is a nonprofit organization serving Kansas, Missouri and Illinois that empowers individuals in their transformation to economic stability. As an OFA Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education grantee, CTS provides workforce training, life coaching, relationship education, and intergenerational support to low-resourced individuals and families.

Policy Announcement / Memoranda
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance of the Office of Justice Programs issued a solicitation for grant funding to support probation and parole agencies in identifying effective practices that reduce recidivism and create comprehensive violent crime reduction strategies. Required deliverables for grant recipients are: an action plan to design and implement an evidence-based program or practice, a mid-term (at 30 months) analysis and research report, and a final (at the conclusion of the four-year grant period) analysis and research report.

Journal Article
This journal article is the result of a qualitative study informed by Arditti’s Family Inequality Framework. The study features interviews with 19 fathers who were recently released from prison and data gathered through a brief background survey. Four main themes identified in the study were parenting from prison, committed fathering, outside influences on parenting, and recreating oneself.
