The Aspen Institute will host a panel discussion on October 25, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Washington, DC as part of the Institute’s Opportunity in America series. This discussion will identify topics for future conversations to include the changing landscape of economic opportunity; how race, gender, and place affect the economic divides; and new ideas that address these challenges and broaden a more inclusive set of opportunities.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Center for Education and Workforce will hold its annual conference on October 24, 2019 in Washington, D.C. The conference will highlight leadership at the intersection of work, education, and technology in a set of sessions that cover the following topics: Technology Transforming the Talent Marketplace; It’s What You Know: A How-to on Competency-Based Hiring; Next Gen Talent Finance: Public or Private?; Access to Opportunity: Diversity and Equity in the Workplace; and Maximizing In-House Talent: Upskilling That Works.

Toolkit
This Aspen Institute toolkit provides practical guidance for employers on how to approach and engage opportunity youth (young people who are neither in school nor working) and design initiatives so they are positioned for current and future economic challenges and jobs. The toolkit also offers resources on how to use labor market research as the basis of conversation between employers and youth. The approach is drawn from insights from Denver, New York, and Seattle pilots.

This Urban Institute report presents motivations and barriers faced by employers that provide work-family supports. The report also highlights employer perceptions about public policies that help low-wage workers address or manage work-family supports, such as paid leave, workplace flexibility, and subsidized child care. The findings also reveal ways that employer-based policies can be integrated and aligned with work-family supports.

The Larimer County Works Program has implemented a goal achievement coaching model (Goal4 It!) hand-in-glove with a technology-based coaching platform, TuaPath. The combined approach, referred to as My Journey to Success, has redirected TANF staff and participants’ time and energy toward employment outcomes. With online and in-person tools to plan and track action steps with coaches, this approach supports participants in building executive function skills, goal setting capacity, and accountability to reach employment and life goals.

Research-To-Practice Brief
This RAND Corporation brief reviews the New Orleans’ Career Pathways Training Program and its three stages for opportunities within the advanced manufacturing, health care, and information technology industries. The three stages under review include recruitment, training, and coordination with employers. The brief identifies some of the program’s successes and challenges in the implementation of the initiative and provides recommendations for lessons learned in applying the program to other communities.
