The program serves individuals age 16 and older who do not have their high school diplomas.
The program provides one-on-one GED tutoring at two sites on the reservation and one site just outside the reservation. At the beginning of the program, beneficiaries take a GED pretest to identify the topics where they need the most support. After taking the pretest, beneficiaries can visit the tutoring sites on a flexible basis during open tutoring hours. At the tutoring sites, AmeriCorps members provide one-on-one support, using examples and lessons that will build the student’s skills. The tutoring sites also provide access to books and online GED resources. When participants qualify to take the official GED tests, AmeriCorps members assist them in registering and scheduling the tests at Sitting Bull College’s GED testing site. In addition, the program offers testing vouchers for participants and bus transportation to the college GED sites. AmeriCorps members also provide students with college and career guidance and counseling, such as college readiness resources, information about scholarships, and networking opportunities.
Since 2013, the AmeriCorps/Sitting Bull College GED Project has assisted 84 individuals receive their GED certificates to date. Approximately 90% of students pass the GED test on their first attempt.
