Promising Models for Preparing a Diverse, High-Quality Early Childhood Workforce in California

This report provides details on programs that recruit and prepare diverse cohorts of educators to teach in programs serving children from birth to age five in California. The report builds on insights from policies enacted at scale in New Jersey that supported similar initiatives and outlines recommendations for policies to better support the ECE workforce, ultimately to strengthen early learning systems. Using case studies, researchers identified three distinct approaches (apprenticeship, community college, and a four-year college) to early educator preparation that offers innovative, affordable pathways to preparation for diverse candidates.
