Identity and Cultural Dimensions

One’s culture, beliefs, sexual identity, values, race, and language all affect how one perceives and experiences mental health conditions. Cultural differences can influence what treatments, coping mechanisms, and supports work for diverse populations. This webpage highlights how identity and cultural dimensions affect the mental health and mental health care of Asian American and Pacific Islanders, Black/African Americans, Hispanic/Latinx populations, Indigenous populations, persons who identify as LGBTQI, and people with disabilities. The webpage presents data for each of these identified groups on help-seeking rates, important cultural factors to consider, barriers to mental health care, and how to seek culturally competent care.
