2021 National TANF Directors’ Meeting Session: TANF Data Collaborative: How States are Building Data Analytics Capacity
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Family Assistance (OFA) conducted the 2021 National TANF Directors’ Meeting from September 20 - 24, 2021. During this concurrent workshop, representatives for the TANF Data Collaborative (TDC) provided a brief overview and three pilot projects showcased their experiences. California examined wage progression for TANF participants who have left the program from five specific zip codes. Results inform decisions about service needs, service delivery, and equity. New York organized their data into cohorts and spells which is valuable in providing information about duration of TANF receipt, reentry, and basic outcomes. Utah created an analytic file to examine the characteristics that predict a cohort of “leavers” returning to TANF. Utah hopes to identify key program components and family characteristics that are associated with returning to TANF to design key intervention points to help families achieve self-sufficiency.
