2021 National TANF Directors’ Meeting Session: It’s Time for TANF to Engage Lived Experience Experts in More Than Just Their Case Plans

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Family Assistance (OFA) conducted the 2021 National TANF Directors’ Meeting from September 20 - 24, 2021. The importance and value of engaging persons with lived experience in TANF program design and implementation are vital. This call-to-action concurrent session, co-led by lived experience experts, gave TANF programs on-the-ground tools, advice, and examples of how and why authentically and meaningfully engaging current and former TANF customers in more than their case plans will improve outcomes for families and for TANF programs. Presenters shared literature and research on the impacts of lived experience expert engagement on human service research, practice, and policy reform, and provided examples from other human service fields, such as child welfare and victim services.
